I don't think that Mary Martha was such a bad person, at least not so far. She could have abandoned Aimee altogether, or had her live in her house as a maid. Instead she provided Aimee with the best education money could buy. True, she gave her an ornamental rather than academic education, but maybe that was the education she was used to. Maybe the school staff never asked her what adult life she intended Aimee's education to prepare her for, and she never thought of it herself.

I think Mary Martha suffered her own shame and ostracism. She didn't marry until she was 45 years old. Maybe no one would marry her, until Archibald was willing to. They had known each other for years without getting married. Maybe finally Archibald decided to ignore the gossip. Yes, she was in the society pages, but that was probably because no one could prove what she had done. She probably endured a lot of whispering and cruelty also.

As for Martha being a cold person, that was just her personality, worsened by the scorn that probably came her way. She probably lived in fear of her secret coming out, and it made her bitter. I think she loved Aimee, because she visited her. She could have sent her away, paid for her, and never saw her at all. As for not telling her the truth, we cannot imagine today the terrible thing it was to have a baby out of wedlock or be that baby. I think it is similar to knowing our parent is a rapist. It is so bad, it would be better for the child to not know and wonder than to know the truth. Martha thought she was doing Aimee a kindness by not telling her.

As for the cold way Martha told her, she was just telling her the truth as it was at the time....illegitimate children suffered the shame of what their parents did. We all have heard people, when they tell something that makes them very upset, say it very harshly and bluntly.

Martha still couldn't bring herself to admit that it was her. After all, who knows who Aimee might tell? If the schools knew the truth, they probably would have expelled Aimee.

I am following your story closely and waiting eagerly for the next installment. And I love the way you intersperse the story with posts about the factual background. Martha probably gave birth in one of those homes for unwed mothers where they emphasized the sinful part.

I had thought about that possibility early on, but wow! what a heartless social climber Mary Martha is if she is indeed her mother.
