I love the way everything John does backfires on him.

I think Aimee grew a lot of backbone in those boarding schools, and they did teach how to behave in society, which for the rich meant ordering people around. After all, she did escape from Butler with only a 24-hour window, using her wits.

She had lost her backbone in her marriage to John, probably because she was hurt that she had expected love and got cruelty. But the divorce set her free and got her backbone back.

I have undergone such a transformation in my own life, when put in a bad situation not of my choosing. I think it is the kindness of strangers and the willingness of outsiders, such as judges and lawyers, to bolster you that is just the small amount you need to find your backbone again.

Thanks for this thoughtful comment. I agree, there was definitely a tipping point when Aimee had had enough.

I remember getting to this point in the research and realizing what Aimee was setting up - she was going to use John’s hubris to get Mary Martha. I may have cheer a bit lol

Me: I am wondering what so public a declaration will do to her relationships with Mary Martha and other relatives? Of course her husband is the one who made it public, she and her lawyer were the ones who made it official.
