If I recall correctly, there was a concern about too much white water in the spring, which may have delayed their departure, but it still surprised me where they were in December.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. It's mindboggling to think what these guys would attempt in a world filled with the crazy innovations in camping and boating gear today. All of this is without Gortex and Velcro. Ooph!

High winds are a bear anytime of year in a canoe. I always paddled the bow, which required power while my husband steered in the stern. It was harder on me than on him in wind!
