You don't appreciate how much detail goes into both the planning and carrying out such an adventure, just the mere choosing of a campsite could prevent the men with difficult decisions. Then to set up a base and campfire, then cook and eat, it must have been exhausting.

It does seem pretty incredible, especially when we think of planning such a trip today - the logistics would be crippling!

Throw in our “need” for luxuries like solar-powered energy packs for our navigation systems and equipment to sterilize our water, sunscreen and special water resistant clothing, even just the food we’d require!

Different times and expectations, for sure!

I’m sure that whole Army Battalions pack less than when we plan a day at the beach - the phrase “I’ll take that just in case”, is never more used!

The Falls of the Ohio would be treacherous for canoe travelers. These are intrepid men, and not young either!

I can’t help comparing these intrepid adventurers with the classic Three Men in a Boat, who were only playing at having an adventure.

While we know that George was an adventurer and had lots of experience sailing and canoeing, I still keep thinking about the nine year old boy who ran away. He must have been so toughened by his early life that I can't imagine him fazed in the slightest by any danger or discomfort on this journey.
